OPAL

The Purpose and Rationale of OPAL at Summerhill

The OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) program is a research-backed initiative aimed at enhancing children’s well-being, social development, and independence through enriched outdoor play. Evidence shows that diverse outdoor play fosters creativity, cooperation, and physical health. We prioritise independent, child-led play while nurturing leadership through play leaders. OPAL is integral to building relationships and fostering inclusivity, as children of all ages mix and grow together.

What OPAL Looks Like at Summerhill

Our OPAL environment features scooter tracks and tire climbing areas to develop agility and confidence. Loose parts play inspires creative construction. Small-world areas nurture imaginative storytelling, while music and dance spaces encourage expressive play. Our forest area and mud kitchen offer rich sensory and nature-based experiences. Additionally, sports zones promote teamwork and motor skills. Together, these varied play contexts enrich every lunchtime, making outdoor play a cornerstone of growth at Summerhill.
