Why reading is so important?

At Summerhill Primary Academy, we believe that reading is more than just a skill – it is a gateway to imagination, knowledge and lifelong learning. We aim to inspire every child to enjoy reading, explore new ideas, and develop a curiosity about the world.

How We Encourage Reading Every Day

We provide regular, structured opportunities for pupils to read widely and independently, both in school and beyond:

· DEAR – Drop Everything And Read: All pupils take part in daily reading sessions, where they can enjoy books of their choice, fostering a love of reading and building fluency.

· Well-equipped libraries: Our school libraries are stocked with a wide range of books, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and culturally diverse texts, giving pupils access to rich and varied reading material.

· Visits to local libraries: Pupils enjoy regular trips to Tipton Library and Glebefields Library, where they can borrow books, participate in story sessions, and experience the wider community of readers.

· Story Zoo app: All pupils have access to the Story Zoo app, which provides a digital library of engaging texts and interactive reading activities to support reading at home and in school.

· Termly book fairs: Pupils can explore new titles, discover favourite authors, and celebrate reading through our exciting book fairs held each term.

Story Zoo

Every child in school has access to Story Zoo, this gives access to a wide range of virtual books. The more the children read the more coins they earn to populate their own 3D zoo.
