Early Years Curriculum

Our Aim

Our Early Years team aim to provide the highest quality care and education for all our children thereby giving them a strong foundation for their future learning.

We create a safe and happy environment, with motivating and enjoyable learning experiences, that enable children to become confident and independent.

Children are encouraged to demonstrate our school values towards one another and are taught to value differences amongst their peers.

We nurture the individual child and work alongside parents and others to meet their needs and help every child to reach their full potential.

Children are provided with a range of rich, meaningful first-hand experiences in which children explore, think creatively and are active. We aim to develop and foster positive attitudes towards learning, confidence, communication and physical development.

The Early Years Curriculum (EYFS)

Activities are planned in the unit following the Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS).  This covers seven areas of learning and development, which are made up of three prime areas:

  • communication and language
  • physical development
  • personal, social and emotional development

These are then strengthened and applied through four key strands:

  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design

Learning and development opportunities are planned around the needs of the individual child and are assessed and reviewed regularly.

All of the areas of learning and development are interconnected to the characteristics of effective learning, which are ‘playing and exploring’, ‘active learning’ and ‘creating and critical thinking’.  Here at Summerhill, we have a balance of teacher directed tasks and child initiated activities, which allow children to develop to their full potential.

Our Nursery environment

We provide a secure, safe and happy environment which ensures that the children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe.  We promote a strong partnership between practitioners and parents/carers to support children's experiences and respond to their individual needs.
